Tail scale detail:

About a foot long; found, dead, in the parking-lot of the block of flats I live in. It's too boringly-coloured for an adder or a grass-snake, not enough legs for a lizard, but it doesn't look very like the slow-worm pictures I could find on the Net; I'd have thought the splayed-out scales at the tail were diagnostic, but the pictures on the Net didn't seem to show the tail.

Looks like one to me. We got them in our garden in Germany quite often. See this picture and others in that album.
