If it'd been me, I think, I'd have done 1 setlinecap as well as 1 setlinejoin. (Or equivalent if you didn't actually use PostScript, of course.)

I did it in GD::Simple, which defaults to the state it's in; I suppose I could add small circles at the start and end points.
