Folly

Many are the wise. Many paths head through the wood of data to the way of wisdom. And along none of those paths is it written that it is wise to read Citadel of the Autarch when half-asleep on a train.

I'll start it again. Maybe it will be in English this time.

Aha!

All the incomprehensible names for beasts are either exact or variant versions of the names of assorted early-Pleistocene mammals; uintatheres, platybelodons and the like.

I should have guessed this; there was a footnote about it, after all, either one or two books ago.

There are lots of footnotes in _Castle of the Otter_, if you like that sort of thing. I found _Citadel_ a book that rewards rereading, though it needed more attention than "half-asleep on a train" the first couple of times.
