New userpic! NEW with extra dolphins

I went out in a boat from Lavina in northern Bali at 0630 one day; of 85 photos of the jumping dolphins, this was the only one I actually caught out of the water.

The really astounding thing I saw that day, but wasn't able to photograph, was a flying fish; I had read descriptions of them that made their flight out as a kind of lengthened leap, but this one was moving fast, a foot or so above the water, and seemed to be flying pretty straight and level for twenty or thirty metres!

Wow.

You ought to be able to sell that to somebody.

Unfortunately it's a very severe crop of an image of lots of empty sea with a small jumping dolphin just above the horizon; if I'd managed to get a jumping dolphin filling the frame, that would probably be sellable for maybe as much as 1% of the cost of the ultra-telephoto lens required to take such a picture.

On the other hand, I've uploaded to this article some more dolphins which I did manage to get at four-megapixels.

Yeah, flying fish are awesome. If you come to California, you should go out to Catalina; at certain times of year, you get flying fish on the boat-ride there, too. And dolphins.
