Two small Mac questions

fivemack1. Is it possible to prevent iPhoto from starting up whenever I insert an SD card or turn on a Firewire drive? It wouldn't be so much of a problem if it didn't take five minutes to load the photo library, during which time it can't be quitted.
2. Is there any way of getting messages filed in smart-folders in Tiger Mail to be invisible from the inbox folder? A smart-folder of messages not otherwise filed in smart-folders would also work, of course.
