Sense

So, since Wednesday I've been coming down with a cold. My nose runs, my throat hurts, assorted muscles gently ache, I run on Strepsils and Lemsip.

Tomorrow I'm signed up to do a forty-mile charity bike ride, up and down assorted hills. There's £80 in sponsorship riding on this; on the other hand, the cost to the NHS of treating me for bronchitis, pneumonia et al might much exceed that.

People have this view of 'colds' and 'flu', where a cold is 'you are faking being ill' and flu is 'you are ill enough to stay off work'. The medical profession doesn't really recognise this classification. If your muscles are aching, then your immune system is under strain. People have died from over-training whilst infected with a virus.

I would suggest to your sponsors that you will do a 40 mile ride as soon as your health is up to it. Anyone worth the bother will accept that.

If it's anything like what I've had for the last three weeks, definitely in Super Lunacy territory.

Good luck :/

You need to be working well to cycle 40 miles. You aren't. Therefore, don't.

I've been resting at length to recover from bronchitis--if you can avoid it by not going cycling tomorrow, that's definitely a net win.

I don't know what the charity is, or who's sponsoring you, but I suspect some of them would still be willing to donate if you explained why you hadn't ridden.

If you're already aching, riding is not a good plan at all.

Understanding sponsors will react as [livejournal.com profile] purpletigron and [livejournal.com profile] redbird have suggested.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm not cycling; I'm feeling a bit better now, but mostly lying in bed and catching up on huge piles of reading.

Pesky viruses. Virii. Viropodes. Whatever.
