(close shot) fivemack THROWS A DART AT THE MAP OF EUROPE

Having not got in early enough to book bed-and-breakfast in Cornwall over the end-of-May bank holiday, I'm going to Berlin instead. Berlin Schoenefeld airport is, after all, 45 minutes nearer by train, coach and Easyjet to me than St Ives station, even counting check-in times.

Lots of my readers are vastly better-travelled than I; what should I be looking out to see? There are museums, particularly of archaeology, which, from the guidebook I have, look fit to outshine London; there's the Brandenburg Gate and a whole lot of modern architecture near it; there's Checkpoint Charlie. Is there anything that people who have visited Berlin would tell me not to miss?

I can recommend an excellent hostel of the friendly to international travellers persuasion - the Lette'm Sleep (http://www.backpackers.de/index-b.html), on Lette Strasse in East Berlin. This is also near a rather nice complex called the Kultur Brauerie - I was there the weekend of Love Parade, so most of it was being used for musical events and clubs.

It's three years now since I was in Berlin (evidence available on scrolling back far enough through my LJ or weblog (http://weblog.akicif.net/blogger.html)), but had I the pennies I'd be back like a shot.

Sadly, I have no advice on Berlin, since I haven't been there. [livejournal.com profile] rwrylsin and I will be there at the end of August long weekend, for much the same reason as you - it doesn't cost much more or take much longer than getting to somewhere like London from here, and ... well, it's Berlin , y'know ?

Just out of interest, what would have happened if you had thrown the dart and hit a North Sea oil rig? Aside from a mass oil slick.
