Things To Do In New York State

I'm going to Montreal at the end of September for [livejournal.com profile] farthingparty, and realise that it's fifteen years since I last went to New York City or Washington DC, and therefore probably worth going down there afterwards.

What should I stop off and look at on the train between Montreal and NYC? Or is every minute I spend in upstate New York better considered a minute that I'm not spending at the Smithsonian?

Should you have interest, I could meet you in either NYC or DC.

Unrelatedly, I saw your comment about energy storage on the Guardian a few days ago and, if I understand you correctly, agree with you. (FWIW, one of the guys I used to work with is now responsible for setting the prices to decide whether the big Welsh pumped storage stations will be pumping or not.) Do you have any opinions on the LightSail Energy storage technology (http://lightsailenergy.com/tech.html)? I would trust the information of your viewpoint about GWh-scale practicality and viability much more than my own.
