Canvassing industrial pilgrims

Would any of my readers be interested in a tour of Drax, the four-gigawatt coal-fired power station located mid-way between Leeds and Hull? Tours have to be arranged specially, but the logistics are not substantially worse for a small group than for an individual. I am a shareholder, but I don't think that owning eleven hundred nanodraxes will get me any usefully special treatment.

I'll need to ring and get absolutely basic information like whether it's possible to go at a weekend, but I'd quite like to know before then whether I'd be going alone or contemplating booking a minibus. Would be planning to go sometime-in-October, assuming that plans don't have to be made months in advance.

Depends how quickly I can find a job in the UK! (October seems unlikely)

I'd love to, but it's rather too long a jaunt.

Thanks for giving me a radio button! :-)

It's the sort of thing I would like, but a bit far off for me on current plans.

Do I need to declare the precise nature of my special interest at this point, other than that I know at least two people who have left the company for whom I work in order to go and work there?

I might be interested at a weekend, but it depends critically on whether it's a child-enabled weekend or not, which I don't know yet. (JFI, would be interested to know whether middling-size kids are allowed, although I think it's well outside her current interest parameters.)

How about the week after Eastercon?

I would like to but it's a bit too difficult for me to get up there and back again :( hope you have a nice time though!

for me, option E: No thanks; I already visited a number of times with school, and indeed I remember doing an A-Level physics project where I tried to work out its efficiency. I seem to recall quite enjoying it at the time, though.

In the highly unlikely event that I'm free and you have spare space I'd be interested and tag along, but life is crazy-busy at the moment, and I'm trying to not over-commit too much :-/

I'd like to but I'm not sure I can reasonably get to N. Yorkishire; although I assume that if you are managing the transport faff for yourself then it can be managed.

Three or so hours from Cambridge station (change Peterborough, Retford) and then either ten quid in a shared taxi or 10km on a fafffully-transported velocipede.

So it's a bit of a long day, and a bit of an early day if they want to start at 10am, but not insuperable.

Any further thoughts on this, now we're in October?

Unrelatedly, another friend of mine (Chris Venus, Keble '96-'99, if the name rings any bells) wrote in a public place: "I've decided that I might finally get around to my plan of visiting the Ukraine and going to see Prypiat which is the abandoned and irradiated city near the Chernobyl nuclear plant."

Can't remember whether you've done this yourself or not already, but if you haven't, it does sound like the sort of thing you might like. I'm happy to vouch for him as being a sound fellow.
