Nov. 11th, 2005 09:23 amI have walked three times clockwise around [a sapling of a sapling of] the sacred bo tree under which Buddha found enlightenment; I have walked three times clockwise around the gargantuan stone stupa that marks where he first preached.
These particularly surprised me since, presumably thanks to too much Clarke at an impressionable age, I'd thought the Buddha's life was spent in Sri Lanka.
I have seen the pyres at the burning-ghat, and the ladies washing their saris in the holy river downstream; the mosque built by Aurengazeb on the site of the Shiva-temple, and the new gilded Shiva-temple built opposite, with a Raj-era sign in English and Hindi 'gentlemen not of the Hindu religion should please refrain from entering the temple'.
