In die veldt is daar 'n bok

This is an eland, the largest antelope; named after the Dutch word for 'moose'. The fields of southern Africa contain a striking variety of medium-sized browsing and grazing herbivores, generally listed under the heading of 'bok'; click below to see seven other kinds. As always, click on any picture to get a bigger version.

The long-horned gemsbok
The blauwildebeeste, or gnu
The impala, whose ability both to browse and to graze has made it the most common antelope of the veldt
The majestic curly-horned kudu, symbol of the South African national parks
The tiny little steenbok: mates for life, so most pictures contain two steenbok pushmi-pullyu style
The splendidly-masked and strikingly-horned sable (left) and the Red Hartebeest (right)

OMG am I jealous! I absolutely demand to meet up for tea and cake and chat about your visit and look at your pictures at an appropriate opportunity :o)

My favorite is always the Kudu. So shy but stripy and with the coolest horns. Looks almost camel-like in that photo, lol.

I would love to meet up with you for tea and cake but have been too shy to ask for the last six months.

It's Spring now, Cambridge is getting prettier with every passing weekend, and I have no particular plans; would you be able to come to Cambridge some weekend soon? maybe emailing tom@womack.net would be better than trying to plan my social life in my LJ comments ...

mmm, chocolate icon

Hokey dokey, have finally pulled my metaphorical (and actual) socks up and sent an e-mail to you.

Chocolate icon is good. I'm working on one which tastes as good as this looks when you lick the screen.
